Found in: Arborist, Horse & Farm, Scouting
Also known as: Countryman’s Knot. , Lumberman’s Knot
Origin: The Timber Hitch is often used for cargo. According to (Ashley ABOK #1665, p. 290), it’s very handy. It comes apart with little effort when the pull stops.
Uses: The Timber Hitch is useful when towing a spar or log, either afloat or on land. For this use, place the Timber Hitch near the center of the spar. Then, drop a Half Hitch over the spar’s end to serve as a guide. We call this combination the Killick Hitch or the Kelleg Hitch.
Other Applications: The Timber Hitch is also known as a Bowyer’s Knot because it attaches the end of the bowstring to a longbow. It also helps attach strings to stringed instruments like the ukulele and guitar.
