Uses: Ashley called the Overhand Knot (ABOK # 46, p 14) “the simplest of the Single-Strand Stopper Knots.” It also stops the end of a rope from unraveling.
Comparison: The animation shows the close similarity between:
- The Overhand Knot – tied at the end of a rope.
- The Half Hitch – attaches a rope to something, e.g., a hitching post.
- The Half Knot – a binding knot – is the first part of a Square (Reef) Knot.
Double Overhand Knot: The first turn is often followed by a second—to create the larger stopper knot, the Double Overhand Knot.
Recommendations: The Overhand Knot is useful as a stopper. It can be tied tightly against an object or another knot. The Double Overhand is a good stopper knot. But when you need a larger stopper, the Ashley Stopper Knot is better.
