Manger Hitch Details
Found in: Horse & Farm, Quick Release
Origin: Ashley describes the Manger Hitch twice (ABOK #242 p. 44, #1828 p. 308). He writes: The cow is an inveterate slobberer. Although she is not in a class with the camel, someone should secure her with a hitch that will not jam when wet. He later writes, “The Manger Hitch was likely designed as a pacifier for a slobbering cow.” I found it in rural Delaware. A wet knot is hard to untie, but this one is resistant to jamming. Halters in cow barns are as rare today as buttoned shoes in nightclubs.”
The Manger Hitch is a Quick-Release Hitch, but it releases at a slower pace than some others. The wraps may delay rapid release, and the rope has to exit from the ring. For a horse, the Halter Hitch Knot is likely a better knot for quick release.
Other Quick Release Hitches: We describe many other Quick-Release Hitches. When someone pulls the end, several of them release completely.
