Halter Hitch Details
Found in: Horse & Farm, Quick Release
Also known as: Noose Knot
Origin: The Halter Hitch Knot is popular. Ashley mentions it three times: ABOK #243 (p. 44), #1804 (p. 305), and #1826 (p. 308). He writes: “Horses are hitched with this knot the world over. The end is stuck loosely through the loop, which is not tightened. The knot is easily slipped after removing the end from the loop.”
Comparison: The Halter Hitch Knot might seem simple, but it’s a Noose Knot tied with a bight for quick-release. This means you can slip it with little effort. It also shares the same topological characteristics as Falconer’s Hitch. However, the Falconer usually ties this knot using only one hand.
Safety: Use the Halter Hitch Knot with the appropriate precautions.
Other Quick Release Hitches: We describe several other Quick-Release Hitches. Many of these also release completely when you pull the end.
