Figure 8 Knot – A Versatile Stopper Knot
Uses: The Figure 8 Knot (ABOK #570, p. 95) is a quick and convenient stopper knot used to prevent a line from slipping out of reach, such as disappearing into a mast. One of its main advantages is that even when jammed tightly against a block, it does not bind and remains easy to untie. However, this ease can sometimes be a disadvantage, as the knot may loosen and require retying.
Comparison: Compared to the Overhand Knot, the Figure 8 Knot is larger and easier to undo. The Overhand Knot, while simple, can tighten excessively and become difficult to untie. However, stronger alternatives like the Double Overhand Knot, Stevedore Stopper Knot, and Ashley Stopper Knot provide better stability. For slippery ropes, the EStar Stopper Knot is the most reliable option.
Climbing: In climbing, where security is crucial, the Double Overhand Knot is typically preferred as a stopper. However, the Figure 8 Knot plays an essential role in climbing techniques, as it forms the foundation for knots such as the Figure 8 Bend (Rope Join), Figure 8 Loop Follow-Through, and Double Figure 8 Loop.
