Double Turle Knot Details
Found in: Fishing
Also known as: Turtle Knot, Turrel Knot
Origin: British Major William Greer Turle made the Double Turle Knot famous in the late 1800s. But, according to some accounts, Turle himself did not claim to have invented it.
Variations: With fishing lines now available, the original Turle used a simple Slip Knot. Someone dropped this knot over the Fly. One loop was enough; there was no more knot and the end was not trapped under a knot. Modern slippery lines need better solutions. The Double Turtle Knot uses two loops. An Overhand Knot holds these loops in place, while the loops grip the tag end. Some writers add an extra turn to the knot to make a Surgeon’s Half Knot, e.g., Mark Bowler.
Purpose: Anglers use the Double Turle Knot to create a strong connection between a hook or fly and a leader when fishing.
Other Names: People have also misnamed the Double Turle Knot the Turtle Knot and the Turrel Knot.
