Found in: Boating, Horse & Farm, Household, Scouting
Uses: The Constrictor Knot (ABOK # 1188, p. 216) deserves greater recognition and usage. It’s a great quick fix for a fraying rope end. You can use it to hold the rope together while whipping it. It secures the neck of a sack or bag with a firm grip. It also works as a temporary hose clamp. Plus, it can hold items together for gluing.
Alternatives: You can tie the Constrictor Knot using the Twisting Method shown here. You can also use the Folding Method or thread the end when wrapping it around a rail or bar.
Using the Twisting Method: The Twisting Method is fast and easy. You can even use it for short lengths. For example, it works well with twine to secure a fraying rope’s end.
Disadvantages: The Constrictor Knot doesn’t work well on flat surfaces. It needs a curved surface so the binding turn can grip the Half Hitch.
Release: The Constrictor Knot can be very hard to undo – cutting the knot can be the only option. Cut the binding strand over the other constrictor strands when needed. This protects your rope.
