Clove Hitch – Rope End Details

Tying options: half hitches, using loops

Alternatives: You can tie the Clove Hitch in a few ways. You can use Threading the End, Half Hitches, or Stacked Loops.

Caution: The Clove Hitch (ABOK # 1245, p 224) was originally included here as a subject of criticism. It has two giant faults: it slips and, in a paradoxical manner, can also bind. It should raise significant suspicion when used by itself.

Alternatives: There are good alternatives available to the Clove Hitch:

Mooring:

  • A Round Turn and Two Half Hitches
  • Rolling Hitch
  • Bowline
  • Cleat Hitch

Temporary whipping for a frayed rope end

  • Constrictor Knot
