Uses: The Cleat Hitch is a knot used to secure a rope to a cleat, common in boating and sailing.
History: “Belaying a rope” means securing it or making it fast. Before cleats were common, sailors tied a rope to a vertical pin in a wooden beam. They called this pin a “belaying pin.” Ashley talks about different options, like using a single hitch (ABOK # 1594, page 284).
