Barrel Hitch Details

Name: Ashley describes two methods of tying this hitch (ABOK # 2176 and 2177, p 350.) but didn’t give either one a name. Today, people use the Barrel Hitch for both techniques when lifting a barrel upright. The Barrel Hitch offers great value because you can use it with liquid in an open barrel or container. This sets it apart from the Barrel Sling below.
Warning: To create a stable Barrel Hitch, wrap the rope around the barrel. Make sure it is above the center of gravity but below the top to prevent slipping. We must take care to ensure that we position the rope in a straight line beneath the barrel. With smooth and steady lifting, the Barrel Hitch provides reasonable security and safety.
