Arbor Knot Details

Also known as: Canadian Jam Knot

Uses: Anglers use the Arbor Knot to attach the fishing line to the “Arbor” or “Spool Center.” In fact, the Arbor Knot relies on a noose knot, and so, when you pull, it tightens. In Bushcraft, they call the same knot the Canadian Jam Knot. It works well with light rope, like paracord. You can use it to compress a load, such as a sleeping bag, or as the first step in making a lashing.

Tying it: When the Arbor is accessible, the easiest way to tie the Arbor knot is to make a Noose. Then, drop it on the Arbor and pull to tighten. If you make a Slip Knot by mistake it will pull undone. First, pass the free end around the Arbor or load. Then, use the free end to tie the first overhand knot around the line.

Second Overhand Knot: Someone ties the extra Overhand Knot in the Tag End close beside the first one. It’s key to remember: as you tighten the Arbor Knot, the Second Overhand Knot pulls tight against the Arbor. Some people recommend tying this Overhand Knot first to make it easier to wrap the line around the Arbor.

Improved Version: Some fishermen wind the loop two or three times around the Arbor before making the first Half Hitch. This increases the friction, which may benefit a reel with a highly polished surface. The direction of these turns is critical. Wrap them like a Tensionless Knot. When you rotate the reel, it tightens the wraps.

Releasing: Pulling on the free end, the Second Overhand Knot, loosens the first knot and and makes it easy to release.

Advantages: The Arbor Knot (Canadian Jam Knot) is simple, straightforward to learn, and effective.
