Origin: The Adjustable Grip Hitch is a friction knot. It adjusts with ease when it’s not loaded.
Uses: The Adjustable Grip Hitch is useful for tensioning a line such as a tent ridgeline or a guy line. Adjust the knot by sliding it along the standing end. You might need to tighten it by pulling on the leg that forms the knot.
Caution: Avoid using the Adjustable Grip Hitch for critical tasks like climbing. It can slip under shock loads.
Variations: You can tie this knot using a loop for the final step (“slipped”); then pulling on the end releases it. To secure a slippery rope, wrap the end around the standing part three times. Then finish the knot.
Advantages: The Adjustable Grip Hitch holds tight. Some say it is easier to learn and remember than other friction knots.
Disadvantages: Until completed, the knot cannot “take the load”. The Midshipman’s Hitch starts as an Awning Hitch. It can hold weight for a short time. This can be useful when setting tent guy lines or taking the initial load of a mooring line.
